How To Measure Student Engagement

For the educators involved in the North Coast Arts Integration Project, an AEMDD grant, improving student engagement through arts integration was a key goal. However, finding a reliable way to measure that engagement provided challenging for project coordinators Bill Funkhouser and Heather Gaiera. According to the United States Department of Education's quarterly Arts In Education Newsletter, the coordinators had to do extensive research before they found an existing rubric that could be modified for their purposes. The process of fine-tuning the rubric, however, "helped us refine our thinking about what we wanted to measure and how we could make the instrument work for us," noted Mr. Funkhouser. "It served as a catalyst for conversations with teachers about student engagement." To read full article, visit HERE.
