5 Tips for Creating an Assessment Tool

 

You've spent a lot of time and effort on the creation of a dynamic unit plan. Now it's time to develop an instrument to assess your students' knowledge of the content. There's no need to recreate the wheel, suggests a recent article in the United States Department of Education's (USDOE) quarterly Arts In Education Newsletter. Existing instruments can be adapted and adopted for your purposes. For example, the American's for the Arts has developed a YouthArts Evaluation Toolkit, which offers a variety of assessment materials. While the USDOE article focuses on arts content, the assessment designing ideas, such as how to write questions and checking a tool's relability, can be applied to any content.
